According to the Google Earth blog, most satellite images of the country are updated about every three years, with one exception being the Tonopah Test Range in Nevada, which seems to have been lost.
The duo's project highlights the pad nature of Google Maps Mehrota and Byrne write that some of the images in the mapping program are aerial photographs, taken from airplanes or helicopters.
